I, like everybody else, just wanted to download Forza because it looks amazing. Because most driving games as of late have been disappointing and just too small. There hasn’t been enough variety in vehicles. And if there was, it wasn’t free roam, which is a feature I like immensely. In short, nothing has been Test Drive Unlimited 1 with both DLC car packs which still runs like clockwork on my 8 year old, Core Two Duo 2.1, NVIDIA 9800GT powered tower. I have wanted to play Forza since I found out that Forza 4 had the 1962 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3. But I am a PlayStation faithful with a Sony-superiority complex, so I refused to buy an Xbox. Well with Horizon it would seem I could finally have my cake and eat it too.
Well no, I guess not after all.
Years ago I was getting ready to go to college. I knew I needed a laptop and my aforementioned gaming tower, which I built myself, was already getting long in the tooth. So I decided to kill two birds with one stone, and buy a gaming laptop that would not go obsolete for a very long time. So, my current rig is a Toshiba Qosmio X870. Intel i7 quad core @ 2.4 gHz, twin 500GB HDDs, NVIDIA GTX 670M graphics, Harmon Kardon speakers, everything you could possibly want. And with those specs, it doesn’t meet recommended, but it’s sure as hell is above minimum.
Well, I bought the Ultimate Edition of Forza horizon a day late, and when it didn’t download, I assumed I had to wait for today like everybody else. Then somebody told me I needed to update windows to the new Anniversary edition first, which took me all day because it kept hanging up preparing for the installation until I sat down, watched it like a hawk, and was finally present when it prompted me to authorize the update despite the fact that codecs on some of my music wouldn’t be compatible with the new version of Windows 10. Whatever. I can change codecs later and I put everything on my Zune to play anyway. So I finally got the damn computer to update Windows, the school’s wired internet ripped through that 50GB download like butter in just over 14 minutes, it installed and...
Your PC does not meet minimum requirements in the following areas:
Graphics card does not support dx12 (Code:FH501)
Which is quite fascinating because !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
This is why I think of Microsoft as a necessary evil, better the devil you know kind of thing, and why I prefer console gaming by leaps and bounds to PC. Because PC doesn’t work. Ever. Steam was the first time I ever had games on my computer work reliably. But you have to go through Microsoft to get Forza and I should have known it wouldn’t work, and now I’m out $105.
Great.
End Rant.

As far as I’m concerned, I Microsoft hasn’t been a PC gaming producer since 2001 or so. Only because of Steam have they actually realized there’s money to be made. But they still suck at it.
Also, personally wouldn’t ever buy a laptop for gaming. And I wouldn’t buy a console either.

Ask for a refund. I bought it earlier and it didn’t run in my computer because anniversary edition won’t work on my computer for the time being. Did a quick live chat and got a full refund.

With general Microsoft support or something more specific?

update your graphics drivers.

Yeah...that was the very first thing I did.

The system requirements are rather high for Forza Horizon 3. My 1 year old laptop with a 6700HQ and 960M doesn’t even meet the minimum requirements.

Between Scorpio and the S, original Xbox Ones must be cheap on the used market. #Wink, Wink. Nudge, Nudge#

Microsoft Store billing specifically. I got to it by going to my account and clicking for help regarding the purchase.

Done and done!
Nothing like a free game that doesn’t actually work, eh?

Just get a Xbox already, even the One S is cheap and kind of better than the PS4 Pro.

I had a similar issue with Dark Souls. It was cheap on Steam (and expensive pre-owned on console), so I picked it up very excited to find out what the hype was about.
Didn’t run at all. Spent hours trying to get it to start. Failed.
Bought it on PS3 and it just worked. That’s what I get for adventuring into PC once in a while...

I’ve heard from quite a few people that the PC version is having quite a few issues. Hopefully they get patched soon and maybe it’ll work for you

This is shocking. You have a Zune?!
![]() 09/28/2016 at 08:41 |

An oroginal 16 gig Zune HD.
I hate Microsoft less than I hate Apple.

This is a categorically untrue statement.
You have insulted my console and I must throw down the gauntlet. FISTICUFFS!

After Games for Windows LIVE, and Microsoft always throwing away PC DLC content without even bothering to offer it for free.. I will not be bothered to buy the PC version. I don’t have any next gen console, so I’ll just play the original Horizon on my dusty 360. If Horizon 3 gets offered without all the BS on Steam, I’ll consider it (never going to happen)..
And I want to play this game. When I found out they included the GMC Van.

Laptops do not qualify as part of the PC Master Race.
Sorry mate, you’re not one of us.
![]() 09/28/2016 at 11:01 |

It’s a PC, it’s specifically built for gaming, that sounds like PC master race to me.

Just get an XBOX man, forget the PS Master Race, come suck Microsoft’s dick with me. Also all the cool V12 owners have an Xbox.

My PC works for almost anything. Sometimes things everyone else has trouble with.
And don’t give me that. I had Bloodborne crash 3 times on me on PS4. :/Consoles have issues too

Only good laptops count. Also laptops that support external GPUs count too.

It’s actually untrue.
Know what is amazing? 60fps.
144fps is best though. (Particularly with racing games.)
But that’s getting into a discussion about how the eye actually works and distance traveled per frame shown... Then getting into input lag discussion as well.
iRacing kinda makes you think of those things.

Xbox is inferior. It always has been inferior. And you can take your Xbox S-for-Smug edition and shove it because the PS4 Pro is gonna blow you all back to the stone ages!
Coincidentally, I was just at gamestop pre-ordering Mafia III and the 500GB Xbones are only $220...

Zune users unite! I am still rocking my 1st gen Zune 30GB. I use it all the time, and it will be a very sad day when it stops working..

I think you need to buy it. I was playing horizon 3 on mine last night. It was fun.

Zune lol.
Sorry for your troubles. Maybe getting a new GPU isn’t a bad idea if you can afford it right now, it’s sure a GTX 1080 will serve you a long time, especially with an i7.
Here’s a land yacht to make you feel better.

I was wrong. The S is for sardonic and sarcastic.

I’ve never met a Toshiba laptop that was worth a damn, they just have this inherent suck in them somehow and it comes out in the worst moments (like you needing to play Forza). Honestly I would look into replacing the graphics card or the whole package - the 670M isn’t going to keep up with current releases much longer. I have an 860M in my 2 year old Acer gaming laptop and it’s already light years behind the current wave.

Coughing up $1,700 on a new Alienware 17 is what I’ve been trying to avoid.
I’m just gonna build a new tower.

I wish I had done that

1. Lol toshiba
2. lol “gaming laptop” and “not go obsolete for a very long time”
3. It’s very likely just you need to download the latest driver from NVidia’s website. I had a similar problem on my desktop with a GTX750ti

I have never liked consoles. They seemed to be designed only to suck you in with the low starting price and then make you spend thousands of dollars on accessories, overpriced games, and paid online. Seems that Microsoft is trying to bring the most horrible part about consoles to PC.
So, I made the decision to switch to Linux. With Valve pushing SteamOS, Linux gaming is growing rapidly. No more dealing with Windows tracking you and selling your data, constant crashing, installing drivers and DirectX crap.
http://itvision.altervista.org/why-windows-10-sucks.html
Fuck Forza. It was a good game, ruined by Microsoft’s greed. At first it was an Xbox exclusive so they could sell more consoles, and now it’s a Windows 10 exclusive only because Windows 10 can make them just as much cash.

1. It’s the best, most reliable, and most durable computer I have ever owned.
2. Gaming laptops are not unicorns, the loc ness monster, or a new naturally aspirated V8 american luxury sedan. They exist. And it is capable of running recommended spec for a lot of new games. Civilization 6 for example, will run flawlessly. I am not the kind of person who spends $5,000 in parts to chase 60fps in 1080p.
3. You’re the second person to suggest that and you’re the second person I’m telling that I am not a moron and know to at least do that as part of my normal troubleshooting protocol.
![]() 09/28/2016 at 21:50 |

1. That may or may not be saying much.
2. Not my point. Gaming laptop technology advances in a much different (read: faster) way than desktops. The fact that, compared to the desktop counterparts most gaming laptops are marginal at best when NEW they quickly get outmoded by new software technology that the rapidly-aging hardware can’t keep up with. In some cases you can get lucky and replace the discreet graphics, but I dunno if an older model like that can do that.
3. And we’re supposed to know your computer troubleshooting abilities by... magic? The long and skinny of it is that instead of buying a sports car and a comfy sedan you got a 2012 Nissan Maxima “4DSC”. Technically the company says it’s both, but it only cost slightly less than the alternative and is kind of a rubbish compromise. Not going to assume greatness from that.
